“Lo Hennessey is a Massachusetts-based artist who graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Simmons University in 2016. Lo began her creative journey at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. When a Covid lockdown was announced, Lo and her roommate transformed a spare room in their Boston apartment into a painting studio. Her roommate, an art school grad, filled the studio with some old art supplies and instructed Lo on basic painting principles. Lo picked up a paint brush and became enthralled painting; spending all of her free time in the studio.

Prior to the pandemic, Lo worked as a physical therapist for Boston Public Schools. When the lockdown occurred, she was transferred to a nursing home in a low-income area of Boston. The devastating impact of Covid-19 at this facility propelled Lo towards painting as an emotional release. Her work became a blending of emotion and anatomy: she celebrated the lives of her physical therapy patients by incorporating ethereal forms and vibrant colors in her paintings to highlight the interplay between emotions and physicality.

As Lo’s career progressed, she transitioned from acrylic paint to oil paint. She grew fond of the flexibility of oil as a medium, and today, works primarily with oil on canvas. She enjoys capturing the subtle complexities of her subjects through vivid, realistic colors and light. Her most recent exhibit includes four oil paintings created during 2022. Three paintings are intended as one installation- the “Nude Series”- which is a study of the female form. The model is an avid yogi, with the paintings demonstrating joint hypermobility in the spine, hips, feet, and elbow. She incorporates vivid colors and femininity into the model’s movements. The fourth oil painting, titled “Moneymaker,” highlights her interest in fashion, figurative distortion, vibrant color, and the female body.

These days, Lo keeps busy by exhibiting her artwork in Boston, MA, continuing her art education, and working as a physical therapist. She loves to travel and finds inspiration in nature. You can see more of her art gallery at www.lohennyart.com and on Instagram @ LoHennessey.”
